X-Trial wash up – literally!

IMG_4533Firstly congratulations to all the riders who competed at the 2 rounds of the Australian X-Trial Championship over the weekend , and massive props to Kyle Middleton (Gas Gas) for his decisive victory in both rounds to take a well deserved series win. Second was home town hero Neil Price (Beta), and completing the podium was Victorian Tim Coleman (Beta).

Kyle Middleton find grip on the big Titan Tyres Section.

Friday night: Round one at Barbagallo Stadium saw the usual baseball diamond transformed to feature giant tyres, massive wooden cable drums,  skip bins and a host of man made obstacles turned into an imposing sets of sections.

The action started thick and fast with the first two of eight riders completing the qualify sections, and the head to head race. Kristie McKinnon (Gas Gas) and Craig Austin (Sherco) gave an admirable go at the giant sections and really got the crowd yelling for more with their gutsy performances.

All eight riders completed the qualifying rounds, and left the final four for the evenings shootout. There were so many great rides, it was inspiring to see the cream of the crop push themselves to master the X-Trial layout.

Through to the RD 1 Final was:

Kyle Middleton (Gas Gas), Colin Zarcynski (Gas Gas), Kevin Zarcynski (Gas Gas), and Neil Price (Beta)

The demanding layout saw a great mix of cleans, but mixed with a lot of points and  a few jaw dropping “fiascos” that had the crowd jumping from their seats.

The event was conceived and  designed by Neil and Simon Price from Moto Dynamics. Neil and Simon along with a terrific group of West Australian Trial enthusiasts put on another outstanding show that they have to be proud of. An outstanding job from the whole Team.

The final for Round 1 was fought out with eventual winner Kyle Middleton taking the first round win. There were great rides from all four finalists, but Kyle showed why he is currently number one, with world class talent driving him to the top of the dias.

Results Round 1:

  1. Kyle Middleton ( Gas Gas) – 12
  2. Colin Zarcynski (Gas Gas) – 23
  3. Kevin Zarcynski (Gas Gas) – 25
  4. Neil Price (Beta) – 25 countback

Round 2 – Saturday evening.

The format was the same as Friday with all 8 riders competing the Qualifying rounds, then the top 4 going through to the finals.

Round two started off with a bit more confidence from all the riders, having completed a daunting Friday evening with everyone mastering the conditions without injury. There was even some sunny dispositions when the previous night a few looks of terror were more the norm. But this sunny side didn’t reflect the view on the horizon as a massively unseasonal storm was approaching. The weather radar showed a very imposing front heading directly for the Baseball stadium.

The first two qualifying heats saw Craig Austin and Kristie McKinnon, then Tim Coleman and Chris Bayles compete in dry conditions, but then it started to rain during the Qualifying heat break. The addition of H2O to the skip bins, and section 5 the Titan Tyres really added another level of treachery for the remaining 4 riders, and suddenly the leader board was looking very different.

A 20 minute interval between Qualifying and the final saw the heavens finally break and the storm hit with full force. Officials duly called off proceeding just into the final as large lightning bolts were crashing overhead, and minutes later all power was gone pitching the arena into an inky darkness. Rotten luck for the organisers who had put in so much effort to turn on such a great event.

So Round two was eventually decided on results achieved over the qualifying session.

  1. Kyle Middleton (Gas Gas)
  2. Tim Colman (Beta)
  3. Chris Bayles (Gas Gas)
  4. Neil Price (Beta)
  5. Colin Zarcynski (Gas Gas)
  6. Kevin Zarcynski (Gas Gas)
  7. Craig Austin (Sherco)
  8. Kristy McKinnon (Gas Gas)

So based on the combined scores of round 1 & 2 the Championship outcomes was decided.

Australia X-Trial Champion for 2016 – Kyle Middleton (Gas Gas)

Second: Neil Price (Beta)

Third: Tim Coleman (Beta)

Congratulations to all the riders who made the big trip to WA for this second running of the Australian X-Trial Championship, and to Kyle, Kevin, Colin, Chris and Kristy for representing Gas Gas so well in the testing conditions.
